Open-source alternative to Duolingo

Duolingo is one of my favorite apps in the world. I like it so much that I wanted to have a similar experience to learn other subjects.

That's why I'm creating UneeBee, an open-source alternative to Duolingo that will allow users to teach or learn anything.

UneeBee is currently live on Product Hunt:

It's pretty early-stage, so there's a lot of things to improve. Everything on this project is going to be public, so you can check the roadmap on GitHub too.

This product is being developed under an MIT license:

About this project

Interactive learning is more effective than traditional methods. Learners remember 10% of what they hear, 20% of what they read but 80% of what they see and do. That's why 34 hours of Duolingo are equivalent to a full university semester of language education.

We love Duolingo. We think those kind of interactive experiences should be used in more fields. That's why we're building UneeBee, an open-source platform to create interactive courses like Duolingo. You can use it at your organization, school, or using our marketplace to share your experience in a fun way.

Tech stack

We're deploying our cloud products to Fly and Neon.

Getting started

Requirements

  • You need Elixir 1.15 or later and Erlang 26 or later…

I think UneeBee will be useful to other people too. I'll soon launch three products using it:

  • Wikaro: Focused on enterprise. It allow companies to have their own white-label Duolingo. I think this is going to be great for onboarding and internal training.

  • Educasso: Focused on schools. It will allow teachers to easily create interactive lessons, compliant to local school curriculum. I want to make it in a way that saves teacher's time, so they focus more on their students rather than lesson planning.

  • Wisek: Marketplace for interactive courses where creators will be able to earn money creating those courses.

I decided to have different products for our cloud offering because each of those users have very different needs. Making separate products will help meet those specific needs while making the marketing side easier to target as well.

I'd love some feedback. I really want to improve this product, so no need to be nice - just let me know your thoughts. :)
