COSS Weekly #38

COSS Weekly, Issue #38: July 18th, 2021

Here's the thirty-eighth issue of COSS Weekly, the global commercial open source (COSS) company category newsletter, brought to you every Sunday afternoon (Pacific Time) by the team at OSS Capital, creators and stewards of COSS Community and Open Core Summit.

We deliver only the most fresh 😋 news from the previous week in COSS across: Funding, Content, Liquidity and $COSS (Public Markets).

This last week saw $225M in funding for Sourcegraph and Pantheon, funding and acquisition activity in the COSS sphere from Soft Bank's Vision Fund 2, public market updates for Couchbase and Kaltura, and podcasts + thought pieces from leaders across the COSS space — from Martin Casado, to Emily Omier, to Guy Podjarny, and Solomon Hykes.

Enjoy!

  • Solomon Hykes (co-founder of Docker, working on dagger.io): "Here is an important lesson I learned the hard way. Your open-source project has a COMMUNITY, and it is part of an ECOSYSTEM. Both are important, but they are not the same. Confuse them at your own peril." Link

  • Matt Aslett (research director at @451Research) shares impact and growth expectations of open-source data platforms — increasing at a CAGR of 15.9% through 2025. Link

  • Why The Next Billion-Dollar Enterprise Software Companies Will Be Born Outside The US — Glenn Solomon (GGV Capital). Link

Follow Jason (MD at Redpoint Ventures and former CTO of GitHub) and Eiso (Founder and CEO of Athenian) as they chat about the biggest lessons they've learned about Engineering Leadership throughout the years. • Read the inspiring story of Didier Lopes, creator of Gamestonk Terminal, in the latest Deepsource Spotlight. Link

  • JJ: "In the same way that every human will want to become a founder, every open source project will want to capture value instead of only creating it. I do not yet know what the implications of this are/will be just yet, but it is an increasingly true observation." Link

  • Open Source in Business highlight video: "Open Source Culture", with James Vasile, Alison Gianotto, and Matt Klein. Link

  • JJ: "As a talented software engineer evaluating your MANY options, always remember: It is fundamentally less risky to join a COSS startup given the core technology is loosely coupled to the company, making your code and development contributions outlast the life of that company." Link

  • Podcast: Software Engineering Daily, "Move Fast with Jeff Meyerson." Link

  • Join Mitchell Hashimoto, live on Dev Tool Time, as he talks about his tools and dev workflow on Wednesday, July 21st at 2PM ET. Streaming on Twitch and Youtube Live, and open to Q&A! Link

  • NLP needs to be open. 500+ researchers are trying to make it happen. (VentureBeat)Link

  • Podcast: What's the difference between: 1) a community of practice 2) a community of users 3) a community of builders ? Join Guy Podjarny (Founder and President of Snyk), on Founder Real Talk with GGV Capital. Link

  • Demis Hassabis (Founder and CEO DeepMind): "Last year we presented #AlphaFold v2 which predicts 3D structures of proteins down to atomic accuracy. Today we're proud to share the methods in @Nature w /open source code. Excited to see the research this enables. More very soon!" Link
