COSS Weekly, Issue #45: September 5th, 2021

Here's the forty-fifth issue of COSS Weekly, the global commercial open source (COSS) company category newsletter, brought to you every Sunday afternoon (Pacific Time) by the team at OSS Capital, creators and stewards of COSS Community and Open Core Summit.

We deliver only the most fresh πŸ˜‹ news from the previous week in COSS across: Funding, Content, Liquidity and $COSS (Public Markets).

This last week saw $1.72 Billion in funding for Databricks ($1.6B alone!), Ventana Micro Systems, Corelight, and Unleash.

Enjoy!

  • Corelight, the first open network detection and response platform, announced their $75M Series D led by Energy Impact Partners. Link

πŸ“š COSS Content

  • Jason Warner: "GitHub acquisition was an all stock deal. At today's $MSFT price it would $23b If done today at that price would be a steal still Example of why stock deals matter. Hold strong in those negotiations (and don't listen to people on twitter when they say you've been duped lol)!" Link

  • OSS Newsletter with Liyas Thomas of Hoppscotch. Link

  • JJ: "Git commits as NFTs sound like a joke with no market. But to me, they are a profoundly cool idea. And extremely promising. Imagine Linus selling the first commit of Linux? Shay selling the first commit of ElasticSearch? Mitchell selling the first commit of Vagrant?" Link

  • @consoledotdev: "Interesting tool of the week: https://github.com/askgitdev/askgit by@askgitdev We like: Can do complex queries like commits by email domain, most frequently changed files, filter by branch. Supports querying GitHub API e.g. query stars, repo language stats, issues/PRs." Link

  • Devocate: "Our @forem community is looking SOOOOO good!" Link

  • Max Hodak: "Does the Google v Oracle decision protect creating an open source reimplementation of the iOS api? asking for a friend." Link

  • Donnie Berkholz: "One way enterprises evaluate a software purchase vs DIY OSS is the cost of time. If a developer makes $100k/yr, that's roughly $50/hr. Let's say that developer spends 1 hr/mo twiddling with their DIY setup vs paying $21 for packaged DX. Already a loss of $29." Link

  • @MallardBeakman: "I'm surprised it took only two days for @getumbrel to download the entire 350 GB Bitcoin blockchain to my Raspberry Pi. Now I just need to figure out what to do with this Lightning network thing." Link

  • Tim Sweeney: "Korea is first in open platforms! Korea has rejected digital commerce monopolies and recognized open platforms as a right. This marks a major milestone in the 45-year history of personal computing. It began in Cupertino, but the forefront today is in Seoul." Link

  • Joe Duffy: "Open source is tough. Hobby projects, often thankless. Build a business, people bristle when you need to make money to fund. BigCo's subsidize with loss leaders to sell more compute/storage. We all do it because we enjoy making people's lives better. More love, less shade." Link

  • Jacek Laskowski: "Did you know that there's a commercial entity behind #ApacheIceberg?! I did not until now. https://tabular.io/blog/introducing-tabular/ Congrats Ryan Blue and Tabular! (lo and behold, they seem not present on twitter?)" Link

  • Solomon Hykes: "We built Docker. Help us build our next thing! http://Dagger.io is hiring founding engineers and PM." Link

  • Sahil: NFT ownership is much more accessible than equity ownership. Link

  • Creative Commons: "'I have found throughout my career, the more I've given away, the more I've gotten back.; @photomatt. We're back with a new episode of Open Minds --- CC's Anna TumadΓ³ttir sits down with Matt Mullenweg, founder and CEO of @Automattic. #CCturns20." Link

  • Supabase: "Check out @jsjoeio and @bpmct talk with our co-founder and CEO @kiwicopple about Supabase, #buildinpublic and that #opensource life. If you don't have 40 minutes for the whole video, the crew don't sound too bad at 2x speed." Link

  • Calendso: "Join us September 15th for our Product Launch Event!" Link

  • Techmeme: "Docker restricts use of its free desktop tool to individuals and small businesses, says companies with 250+ staff or $10M+ annual revenue must use paid version (@timanderson / The Register)." Link

  • JJ: "On chain is enabled by open source and is additive, not an alternative. What would happen if the Ethereum license changed from LGPL to something less permissive? What would happen if the Bitcoin license changed from MIT?" Link

  • Matt Asay: "Wondering what impact open source is having on the world of physics? Of course you are. Here are some answers https://prod-physicsworld-iop.content.pugpig.com/blog/2021/08/2." Link

  • Regina Gerbeaux: "Honestly, there are some days where I'm in disbelief with how quickly @calendso ships - it's unreal. Today is one of those days." Link

  • Umbrel: "yep, access your umbrel from anywhere in the world on an end-to-end encrypted connection without leaking your home IP address over tor --- no big deal." Link

  • Hasura: "In 2yrs, the Hasura GraphQL Engine has grown to 300M+ downloads. And the credit goes to the amazing community. To pay it forward, we're sponsoring open-source GraphQL projects that add value to the ecosystem. Read about the first 3 & why we chose them: http://hasura.io/blog/open-sour." Link

  • Generalist VC interest in COSS is at ...πŸ™ƒ. Link

  • NuxtLabs: "It's time to release http://nuxtlabs.com A thread." Link

  • Ton Roosendaal: "The new Sonic game was made using (parts of) Godot engine. Congrats Juan & team!" Link

  • Paul Dix: "Might be an unpopular view, but I'm thinking @Docker might just turn into a real business. Developer tooling that expands seamlessly into security audited dependencies and access controls. Orchestration was an unfortunate multi-year detour. The new focus feels right AND valuable." Link

  • GitHub: "Have you been looking for an excuse to learn about the free + open source Godot game engine? Stop 𝘸𝘒π˜ͺ𝘡π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 and check out @terrycavanagh's 72 hour game jam that kicks off in just 24 hours! There are lots of resources to help you get started." Link

  • @kcorazo: "I wrote about open-source synthetic biology at @hackernoon for tech folks who have never heard of synbio! https://hackernoon.com/how-open-source-synthetic-biology-can-make-medical-solutions-more-accessible-ns2i32lx Pls RT so that @Friendzymes can get more donations!" Link
