COSS Weekly, Issue #46: September 12th, 2021

Here's the forty-sixth issue of COSS Weekly, the global commercial open source (COSS) company category newsletter, brought to you every Sunday afternoon (Pacific Time) by the team at OSS Capital, creators and stewards of COSS Community and Open Core Summit.

We deliver only the most fresh 😋 news from the previous week in COSS across: Funding, Content, Liquidity and $COSS (Public Markets).

This last week saw $335.5M in funding for Snyk, Supabase, and Seqera Labs, acquisitions from Digital Ocean and Acquia, and updates from some of the most exciting COSS companies in the world!

Enjoy!

  • Kazuki Ohta: "Exactly 10 years ago (2011.09.06), @TreasureData got the first office in Los Altos with 3 of us (@frsyuki, @YoshikawaHiro, me). We went to IKEA to buy some furnitures, and Fry's to buy used WiFi router to save the $. Cannot believe we have now 500 colleagues. Good old memories." Link

  • peer_rich: "i like web3.0 but have serious doubts on how to run non-financial apps like email, basic texts without fees. people are price sensitive and were pissed off when whatsapp charged $1 a year even if tx fees go down to cents, it would still not be free." Link

  • Jono Bacon: "Are you involved in or running an open source project? Well, I put together a video with 5 common mistakes I see, all of which are completely avoidable. Here I dig into licensing, code review, onboarding and much more. #opensource #github Check it out." Link

  • Juan Linietsky: "Another fact of the MIT license is the 'no warranty' clause, written in uppercase. It means the authors bear no responsibility about anything the software may be used for. If Godot is used for military projects, gambling or even illegal activities, we have nothing to do with it." Link

  • JJ: "Open source (OS) is not a warm and fuzzy, abstract thing. Importantly, OS was designed and carefully invented by very smart people (RMS, Raymond/Perens, Peterson)...and carries a precise meaning. Definitionally, OS refers explicitly (and only) to a kind of technology." (View Thread) Link

  • JJ: "Web2 could not exist without open source. Web3 cannot exist without open source." Link

  • JJ: "None of these replacement concepts could even exist without open source as the core, fundamental enabler." Link

  • gf_256: "what using open source software in 2021 feels like." Link

  • Jordan Novet: "'MongoDB was worth just $1.2 billion at the time of its IPO in 2017. It's now the only publicly traded open-source company valued at $30 billion or more.' from @levynews last week." Link

  • Gamestonk Terminal: "We've now added a completely new menu to the terminal. Check out our Dark Pool Shorts menu - now live." Link

  • Raluca Ada Popa: "About the UC Berkeley CS lab culture (such as RISELab @ucbrise) that has become the incubator for red-hot enterprise startups @Databricks, @OpaqueSys, @SiFive, and @AnyscaleCompute." Link

  • ProtonMail deletes 'we don't log your IP' boast from website after French climate activist reportedly arrested by Gareth Corfield. Link

  • Timothy Chen: "This is the first non-infra open source project we talked to, and it's fascinating to see how a open source version or calendly taking off and being a startup on its own. Tune in to listen to @amanda_robs and I talk to @peer_rich about how @calendso is building the future." Link

  • JJ: "Bottoms up transformation is not just happening in software (open source / developer driven communities)... It is also happening in finance (developer traders)." Link

  • Dennis Marttinen: "The announcement blog post for Racklet, an open source data center scale model, just went live! This is the latest project I've been working on over the summer together with @kubernetesonarm and some other amazing folks. Check it out at https://racklet.io/blog/2021/09/introducing-racklet/." • JJ: "Vitalik is 27. In 2015, he founded Ethereum, an open source project with a built in currency, now worth > $400 BILLION. BEHOLD... this is the future of COSS." Link

  • Armon Dadgar: "Sharing a brief update on Terraform and community contributions, given some recent noise. TL;DR: Terraform is continuing to grow rapidly, we are scaling the team, and we welcome contributions. Also we are hiring!" Link

  • ^ JJ's response: "Thank you for sharing this! I actually think it's a great practice to suspend acceptance of "external" code contributions (freezes, stability, curation).. many excellent reasons. Doing so does not make a project any "less" open source." Link
