COSS Weekly #39

COSS Weekly, Issue #39: July 26th, 2021

Here's the thirty-ninth issue of COSS Weekly, the global commercial open source (COSS) company category newsletter, brought to you every Sunday afternoon (Pacific Time) by the team at OSS Capital, creators and stewards of COSS Community and Open Core Summit.

We deliver only the most fresh 😋 news from the previous week in COSS across: Funding, Content, Liquidity and $COSS (Public Markets).

This last week saw $51.5M in funding for Cube Dev, Julia Computing, Gravitee, and Serverless Stack, IPOs for Couchbase, Kaltura, and Instructure, and exciting progress from NocoDB, Hoppscotch, and Forem!

Enjoy!

📚 COSS Content

  • JJ: "The aggregate value of all COSS database companies is fast approaching 25% of @Oracle’s market cap of $244 Billion. My conservative prediction: By 2025, COSS databases will be worth > 50%.  Trends driving this: Platform specialization — graph, in memory, geo transactional, HTAP, etc. categories are splintering into mega players on their own, thus simultaneously dematerializing and threatening ORCL’s footprint. Open source at the core infra software layer has won." Link
  • PlanetScale announces Sam Lambert as new CEO. Link
  • JJ, in response to TechCrunch piece The end of open source? — "Probably the most poorly crafted click-bait headline I’ve ever read…. Open source does NOT mean “free for all unfiltered accepted contribution”. Link
  • Kris Beevers: "Want to contribute to a high velocity open source project and community that already has a huge impact on the world's networks? There is no shortage of opportunity with #NetBox - get involved!" Link
  • Jeremy Howard:"Copilot, from @github and @OpenAI, feels quite magical to use. It can auto-generate multiline functions, tests, and more, using all the context of your current code file. But part of me wonders: are the downsides are too great in practice? 1/". Link
  • Abhishek Nayak: "Appsmith project crossed 5000 GitHub stars today.  Getting here was hard but we did it." Link
  • shawn swyx wang: "I'm excited to finally share why I've joined @temporalio as Head of Developer Experience! Here's my explainer on 3 core opinions of Temporal, why they're hard to do well, and the business opportunities it presents." Link
  • NocoDB, the open-source Airtable Alternative, launches on DEV. Link
  • Image from Sourcegraph on the importance of Code Search in the hierarchy of needs. Link
  • Entreprenerd: "It's unbelievable, but true: every quarter, there are still a handful of people who buy the second edition of "iText in Action" released in October 2010. I wish all those people would also buy a copy of my latest book 'Entreprenerd': https://entreprenerd.lowagie.com." Link
  • Forem introduces Forem Self-Host! Link
  • CockroachDB: Distributed Databases and Containerization with Spencer Kimball (SE Daily). Link

  • JJ: "Hoppscotch just crossed 30K stars, one of the fastest growing open source platforms on the planet over the last 18 months, and perhaps fastest growing Indian startup in the world. Hearty congrats to @liyasthomas and team." Link
  • Liyas Thomas: "Hoppscotch is celebrating the milestone of reaching 30,000 GitHub Stars. This is an achievement of our whole community. Thank you for each contribution, love, and all the commitments that you made to improve Hoppscotch. We are lucky to build this open source project with you." Link
  • Peer Richelsen: "web3.0 is coming. it’s inevitable. and given the nature of decentralization, only open source companies can make the transition.Link

  • Explore 200+ open-source alternatives to popular softwares. Link
  • JJ: "One of the best investors of all time is all in on COSS." Link
  • Sid Sijbrandij: "As far as we know at GitLab it isn't possible to set the default permissions of Google Docs to **Can Edit** and you have to change the permissions from **View** manually https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/www-gitlab-com/-/merge_requests/86796/diffs We hope that Google adds this capability in the future so that everyone can contribute."
